Revisiting Old Works = Nightmare?

"Revisiting old works would only bring nightmare!" That is what many artists/designers/creators says.

This is usually true... but with a few exceptions. At least in my case, there are some exceptions.

I've been clearing and organising some old storage hard disks and I came across a few folder. They are named "Art Backups", "Illustrations" and "Art Scans".

I froze. Really, I did.

In a split second, all the bad designs, ugly drawings and crappy comic stripes came flashing in my mind. And they started a party.

"How good can I be back then when I'm still so bad now?"

But at the same time, I'm curious.

"What kind of crap did I produce last time?"

In the end, I gave in to my curiosity and ... Took a deep breath, I opened the folders.

AHHHHHHHHH!!

As expected, most of them are bad ... Like ... very good for people on diet...

However, there are some that ... surprised me. And I question, "Did I really create those? Did I really drew those?"

No, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying they're very good, but they're much better than I expected. At least they didn't look like something I did when I was 3 years old nor do they question my idea of human, art and design.

I even kinda like some of the designs crap I did back then... and it's weird, because my memory told me that I can't produce anything good enough.

Hmm ... It's a complicated and weird feeling. I can't describe that.

This comic stripe is an entry to the Playfish Halloween competition. This is really "ancient", Playfish is no longer around; they closed in 2013, I think. Anyway, if you intend to read it, it's read by Row - starting from the left row top-down and then to the next row, also top-down.

I don't know why I did this, it's so lame :/
And my grammar and sentence structure ... OMG!!

A portrait of a celebrity. It doesn't matter if you can't tell who it is ... lol

Another portrait.

Some of the works, actually reminded me of the time back then... whereby I really enjoy creating artworks (comics, drawings or illustrations) because I want to create them. They're not to impress anyone nor to compare.

Those times creating art was so fun.

And then I question myself, What made art not fun now?

...

I don't have an answer.

But I do know, it's not always just nightmare when you revisit your old works.

  1. Hello Hiby,

I enjoyed the Frankenstein comic strip! I actually showed it to my son. He laughed too.

If you enjoy creating art, I hope you continue doing it. It's hard for some to find something that they're good at and that they enjoy doing at the same time. If you have the talent, go for it.

    Best,
    Sigrid

    1. I've been doing less art due to some reasons but you're probably right, I can continue to create art if I enjoy them.

Thanks for the kind words, Sigrid! I'm so glad my comic strip made you and your son laugh :)

  2. When something is no longer fun, we feel an aversion to it when we try to do it. We'll go back when we are ready. Some of your art is great.

    1. Thank you, Lee, happy to know you find some of the works good.

Yes, it's always good to take a short break once in a while.
